The State of Baroda traces its origins to 1721 when Pilaji Rao Gaekwad, an officer in the Maratha Peshwa's army, was given the task of collecting the tax revenues from major parts of what is now the state of Gujarat. The Gaekwads arose from humble origins, the name Gaekwad meaning "Cow Herd".
