Comment :
Before Iltutmish, Bengal was ruled by governors appointed by the Ghurid emperors, but the region often witnessed revolts and declarations of independence. In Bengal, Ali Mardan Khalji, a governor appointed by the Ghurid rulers, declared himself an independent ruler around 1210 after the death of Qutb-ud-din Aibak. This act of defiance created instability and prompted Iltutmish to take action to restore central authority. Around 1225, Iltutmish led a military campaign against the rebellious governor of Bengal. After defeating Ali Mardan Khalji, Iltutmish reasserted the authority of the Delhi Sultanate over Bengal and appointed his sown governor to oversee the region. This Tanka was issued during the bengal campaign of Iltutmish, complete mint name and date in margin, Very Rare.
