Comment :
• The Satavahana Empire (approximately 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE) was a powerful ancient Indian dynasty that played a crucial role in the history and culture of the Deccan region. The Satavahanas are often considered successors of the Mauryan Empire in the Deccan.
• They emerged after the decline of the Mauryas, establishing themselves as a dominant force in central and southern India. Their rule marked a significant era of cultural, political, and economic development.
• The empire extended across present-day Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
• The Satavahanas were patrons of Buddhism, supporting the construction of stupas and viharas (monastic complexes). The famous Amaravati Stupa and Nagarjunakonda are associated with their rule.
• They engaged in maritime trade with Rome, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, evident from Roman coins and artifacts found in their territories.
• Gautamiputra Satakarni (c. 78 CE - 102 CE): Considered the greatest ruler; he expanded the empire to its zenith, defeating the Western Kshatrapas.
