Comment :
These coins are strucked during the rule of Daulat Rao Sindhia under the command of General Jean Baptiste Filose after the tract near Isagarh belonged to Filose as his personal fief and came under his control. Jean-Baptiste Filose was the son of a French soldier who had gained an appointment in the army of the Scindias. Jean-Baptiste followed in his father’s footsteps and eventually became commander in chief of the Scindia army. He helped expand the territory under Gwalior rule in a large area to the southwest of the city, between the rivers Chambal and Betwa.
The ‘Cannon’ symbol on these coin must be the personal mark of Filose, one can find this mark in the coins of Sheopur, Sabhalgarh, Bajranggarh, Musagarh and Chanderi as well. All these forts was under the command of General Jean Baptiste Filose with Sheopur being earliest conquest and Principle seat.
His career and coinage are studied in detail by Shailendra Bhandare in an article entitled “Making the most in ‘Troubled Times’: Jean-Baptiste Filose and his Coinage,” JONS 198 (Winter 2009), pp. 16-38.
